- Measurement of Rice
You can use a pot or a cup to determine the amount of rice. If it is the staple food in the family meal, then 2 cups of rice are sufficient for a family of approximately five members.
If it is to be served as a side dish with stew and the likes, then a cup would do.
- Rinsing Thoroughly
There might be impurities, dust, etc. which need to be eliminated. Especially, the white rice needs its extra starch-containing materials to go away. Rinse, until the water looks clean. A mesh strainer can be used for this purpose.
You can also use your hands and do it the classic way. After all, our moms and aunts have been doing this since ages without the strainer.
Next, you tilt the pan or pot to drain the water with one hand while you support the rice with the other hand. Then you fill in the pot with water again. You repeat the process twice or thrice, and that pretty much does the job.

The amount of water should be twice that of the rice. Be precise while doing this since the amount of water plays a vital role in making the rice perfectly cooked.

The Rest of the Steps Are as Follows:
For White Rice
Set the pot of rice with water on top on a stove. Keep the pot there, until the water boils. Then put a fitting cover or a lid on and leave it there for about 15 minutes in the minimum heat.
You can use either your fingers or a spoon to check if the rice is cooked.
If you like the way it is, then you are done here. If not, then turn the stove off and keep the pot on it for about 5 minutes or so. Then, it will be finished.
For Brown Rice
Since they are firmer than the white one, they need much water on the pot. They need to soak the water in after getting boiled. With the lid on, it takes about 25 minutes.
And then tilt the pot over a basin to drain the remaining water away. Then put the cover on again and steam the rice for 10 minutes with the stove off. Then, it is done.
For Aromatic Rice
Jasmin rice tastes nice, when it is toasted with butter and oil in as does the basmati rice. This toasting may take 2-3 minutes in a separate pan. Then you need to move this rice to a pot with boiled water.
Keep them on the stove for the same amount of time as the white rice. Keep it with a cover on. That’s it.
For white and brown rice, you can add some salt, oil, butter to give some flavor to the rice. It is also alright to add nothing.
